Q1 2025: Kickstart Your Year

A group of friends with sparklers around Christmas and New Years time

January is all about fresh starts and new beginnings, but it can also be a bit of a slow month after the holiday rush. So how do you keep that momentum going? Here's the game plan:

January

New Year's Day (Statutory Holiday)

Everyone's feeling refreshed and ready to tackle new goals. This is the perfect time to launch a fresh marketing campaign with a New Year's theme. Think about offering special discounts or promotions to entice those early-bird shoppers.

Maybe a "New Year, New You" sale or a "2025 Vision" discount? Get creative and capture that renewed energy. Just make sure it fits the aesthetic of your business.

Blue Monday (January 20th 2025)

Typically falling on the third Monday of the month, this is known as the most depressing day of the year. And we all feel that it can be a bit of a downer.

The holidays are over, the weather's gloomy, and those New Year's resolutions might already be slipping.

Why not switch things up and keep your customers from feeling down by using this day to offer products or services that promote well-being and positivity

Think about things like stress-relieving products, uplifting content, or even a "Beat the Blues" sale. A little bit of cheer can go a long way in January and can help people feel more positively towards your business.

The Winter Events

January is deep winter here in Edmonton, and you've got plenty of events that embrace it. By far, the biggest is Winterruption, which sprawls out across Downtown from the 22nd to the 26th of January, but this year also sees Deep Freeze on the 18th to the 19th.

No matter what type of business you have, maybe there's a way you can team up with the events, get a stall down there, or run some kind of offer that correlates with the festivities. Get creative and think outside the box!

Other notable events:

February

A family hanging out and playing on the couch at home

Family Day (February 17th)

Family Day celebrates everything family, and this is, therefore, a great time to show appreciation for your customers and their loved ones, celebrating the family of your community.

Plenty of ways to do this, from hosting a family-friendly event, offering special discounts for families, or running a contest that encourages family participation.

The key here is to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere that resonates with the spirit of the day.

Valentine's Day (February 14th)

Ah, the classic, falling on the 14th, Valentine's Day is a prime opportunity to boost sales with thematic marketing campaigns and special offers.

Think romantic dinners, couples' packages, or even "Galentine's Day" promotions for those celebrating friendship. Don't be afraid to get creative and have some fun with your marketing.

Silver Skate Festival (February 7th - 17th)

Celebrating their 35th year, the Silver Skate Festival is back, spanning 10 days from the 7th to the 17th of February 2025.

This family-friendly event showcases all things culture, art, education, sport, and recreation, is free to enter, and allows for tons of free skating.

Check out the website to see what's on, but if you can tie it into your business, perhaps teaming up with another brand, offering discounts, or setting up a pop-up stall, it can be a great way to connect with the community.

Beyond the Calendar: Essential Tips for Edmonton Businesses

A female business owner fills out a calendar on her laptop, planning her business year

Okay, that's the whole year of sales-driving dates and events. But here's the thing: a calendar alone won't magically bring customers to your door (or your website, for that matter!).

You need a solid online presence to truly capitalize on these opportunities.

So, how do you build a killer online presence? Here are a few essential tips:

Get your website in order

Your website is your online home base. It needs to be user-friendly, visually appealing, and optimized for search engines. Think clear navigation, engaging content (like blog content), and fast loading speeds. 76% of consumers check out a business's website before visiting.

Don't miss out on those potential customers.

Social Media Savvy

Edmonton is a social city! Get active on the platforms where your target audience hangs out. Share engaging content, run contests, and engage with followers. Social media is a powerful tool for building brand awareness and connecting with your community.

Make the most of email marketing

Email marketing is still one of the most effective ways to reach your customers. Build an email list and use it to share promotions, announce events, and provide valuable content. Just remember to keep your emails engaging and avoid spamming your subscribers.

Make sure your local SEO is perfect

You're an Edmonton business, so you need to optimize for local searches. Make sure your Google Business profile is up-to-date and accurate, and use local keywords throughout your website content.

Think "Edmonton web design," "Edmonton restaurants," or "Edmonton dentists." You get the idea.

Building a strong online presence takes time and effort, but it's an investment that will pay off in the long run.

Don't underestimate how important this is, though. If you're putting yourself out into the world at these events, people will interact with you, and you want them to like what they see.

Final thoughts

This calendar is your roadmap, your guide, your secret weapon for 2025. But it's not just about dates and events. It's about understanding your customers, connecting with your community, and building a brand that truly resonates with Edmonton.
